Georg Andreas Sorge, Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele
A while ago I broke my left arm rather severely. It is slowly healing, but as yet it is uncertain whether i will ever be able to play the organ again as I used to. I still have a dozen or so recordings from before the accident and I’ll publish those in the comings weeks. After that, I’ll just have to see how well I can play again. Or not.
Körner’s “Der angehende Organist” (Leipzig : Siegel , 1895) is a collection of short and easy compositions for organ, meant for use in service “für weniger geübte Organisten” (lesser trained organists). It comprises music of Körner’s contemporaries as well as older music. Most of it’s contents would fit the target of my website (lesser known organ music). However, most of it’s content is also of rather poor quality in my opinion. Therefore, rather then typesetting the complete content, I choose the compositions that I find interesting and leave the rest.
Among the more interesting compositions are two by Georg Andreas Sorge, that I had not found yet in other sources: the choral preludes to “Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele” and “Nun lob meine Seele den Herrn”. They are both in Sorge’s familiar trio-style. Where often composers go wild in ornamentions to express the “Schmücke dich” of the text, Sorge writes an easy and fluid melody as accompaniment to the choral melody. Simple music and easy to play, but by no means boring.
The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Schnittger organ in the St. Martini-kerk, Groningen (https://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/groningen-st-martini.html).
