Johann Effler, Toccata super Magnificat
Besides the three preludes I published a few days ago (see here: https://partitura.org/index.php/johann-effler-3-preludes/) manuscript Ms 001, owned owned by the Bibliothek der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Frankfurt, contains one more work by Johann Effler: the ‘Toccata super Magnificat’. This toccata features a very short introduction (only 7 bars long), followed by a bicinium (except for the last 4 bars, where a third voice is introduced). The choral melody of ” Meine Seele erhebet den Herrn” is played with the right hand, while the left hand plays a largely freestyle accompaniment. Only in the bar between the two phrases of the melody is material from the choral melody heard in the left hand.
The manuscript uses a way of notating notes in the great octave that I am not familiar with. I’m therefore not sure I’ve identified them all correctly.
The recording was done with the Sweelinq software and the sampleset of the Ahrend organ in the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam (https://sweelinq.com/product/amsterdam-nl-oude-kerk-ahrend-organ).
