Johann Heuschkel, Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her, Vers 2
The second prelude by Heuschkel on “Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her” (in the manuscript of Walther designated as “Vers 2”) is a lovely bicinium. The trouble with bicinia is that thay are often relatively easy to play, but very difficult to get right. Every little mistake or uneavenness in articulation can be heard. This bicinium is no exception. The accompiniment is often nothing more than broken chords. Which makes is very tempting to play it way to fast. I had to use a metronome to keep the tempo more or less steady. And the recording has lots of reverb, to hide a bit my worst mistakes in articulation. But the piece itself is worth all the trouble.
The recording was done on the sample set of the Bader-organ in the Walburgiskerk in Zutphen by Sonus Paradisi for Hauptwerk.
