Wilhelm Karges, Fantasia 2 after Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s Fantasia Chromatica
Karges based at least two fantasia’s in the manuscript on Sweelink’s original Fantasia Chromatica. I say “at least” because there are two short fragments inserted in the manuscript that are probably based on the Fantasia Chromatica as well. They are however probably not meant as independent compositions, but as ways to elongate one of the two large fantasias.
I published the first of these fantasias 8 days ago. Today follows the second. It is a bit less convincing as a seperate piece of music than the first fantasia. Nevertheless, as said, perhaps it’s primary function was to create a possibility to elongate the first fantasia when the need arised while playing it. This second fantasia is a bit tricky to play because of the rapid tuplets about halfway of the piece.
The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Bader organ in the Walburgiskerk, Zutphen (https://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/zutphen-virtual-organ-model.html).
